Courses

To graduate within the regular high school system in Manitoba, students must earn 30 credits (17 compulsory and 13 optional/elective). By enrolling in Assiniboine’s Mature Student High School at the Centre for Adult Learning, students must have eight credits: four of which must be at the Grade 12 level, with mandatory credits in Grade 12 English Language Arts and Grade 12 Mathematics.

Many students do not need to complete all eight credits. Depending on what prior credits students have already earned when they enrol, they may only need one or two credits through CAL to graduate. For many, Assiniboine’s MSHS can be the fastest route to achieve a high school diploma.

Fast Facts

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an application fee for MSHS?

No, there are no program application fees for courses at the Centre for Adult Learning.

What is Accuplacer?

Accuplacer is an online tool that measures your Math and English skills prior to beginning studies at the Centre for Adult Learning. The test is a tool to help us determine at what level you should be entering classes.

If your Student Success Advisor determines that you should write the Accuplacer, appointments are required before course registration. There is a preparation package available that we recommend that all students review before taking the test. The advisor will give this to you at your meeting.

What happens after I take the Accuplacer?

Once we have your Accuplacer results, the Student Success Advisor will make an appointment with you and work with you to determine what your next steps are, and which courses are best suited for you.

We emphasize that a personalized education plan is developed individually with each student to address their specific needs and future goals.

Can I transfer some of my credits from another high school?

Yes, your education plan can take into consideration your previous high school experience. All courses older than 10 years can be transferred upon approval by the CAL Director. Please note that each case is treated as unique, and some courses may need to be updated.

When are classes held?

Classes for our daytime courses are scheduled between 8:30am and 4:30pm, Monday through Friday. Evening course classes are held from 5:00pm to 8:30pm, Monday through Thursday.

What if I can’t attend classes in person all the time?

We have a variety of flexible options for students including full-time, part-time, evening, in person, and online options. Course options vary from term to term, so please contact the Student Success Advisor to help you build a schedule that fits your needs and goals.

What supports are available for students?

Students have access to a dedicated Student Success Advisor, as well as services that are provided to students at Assiniboine College. For more information about supports, please visit our Student Supports page.

Is the Mature Student High School program the same as the regular high-school program when applying to a post-secondary institute?

Yes, both are regarded as equal when applying to colleges and universities.
