Overview

An administrative assistant plays a central role in today’s workplace whether in-person or virtually. This competency-based online program allows you to work and learn at your own pace, while receiving practical and applied training in word processing, accounting, spreadsheets, database and Internet searches, office procedures, communications and business calculations.

This hands-on learning program provides you with the skills and experience to tackle the job.

Students take multiple courses at once and pay for program access by the month until they are done their practicum.

Admissions

  • A complete Manitoba Grade 12 or equivalent
  • English 40G/40S or equivalent
  • Consumer/Essential Mathematics 40S or equivalent

 

English is the language of instruction at Assiniboine. All applicants educated outside of Canada or in a country not on the test exempt list are expected to meet the English language proficiency requirement. See assiniboine.net/elp for more information.

Apply online by visiting the Apply to a Program page. Choose “On-Campus and Distance Education programs for domestic students”. Create an account and select Administrative Assistant and preferred start date in your program choice.

You must have applied, and been accepted to the program, no later the 20th of the month prior to the program start date. We suggest you apply early, but no later than 6 weeks prior to your requested start date. This ensures there is time to review your application, confirm acceptance, and register in your first course(s).

Careers

Graduates may find work as virtual assistants or office managers, data entry clerks, general office clerks or administrative assistants among many other career opportunities. Tasks may include preparing correspondence, reports, statements and other material, operating office equipment, filing, answering phones, managing multiple schedules and other general clerical duties.

Connections

Students graduating from the Assistant Administrative program ,with a GPA of 3.0 or greater, may apply to Assiniboine’s Legal Administration, Medical Administration or Office Management diploma programs, and receive credit for year one. Students must apply for and commence studies with Assiniboine within five years of completing the Administrative Assistant Program.

At-Home Computing

For this program, you are expected to have access to a computer at home. It should have a webcam, microphone and internet access to enable remote learning for the theory portions of your programs.

Courses & Costs

To graduate with an Administrative Assistant certificate, students must successfully complete 63 credits.

Tuition, fees, and Students’ Association fees total $550/month. Students admitted into the program are required to make a $550 tuition deposit that is credited towards the first month’s tuition in the program. Textbooks are not included in this tuition amount. All fees are estimated and are subject to change without notice.

Courses can be selected on a monthly basis. Selections must be communicated to the Program Coordinator, Ben Welsh, by the 20th of the month preceding the desired start date. Access to courses starts on the first of the month. 

Students are given up to four (4) months to complete each course. If a course is completed earlier, the student may continue to another course or other courses that follow their study plan.
