Where the Chemistry Happens…

We are seeking a professional like you to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for the management and execution of the InVigor field breeding program in the Manitoba region, based just southwest of Winnipeg in Oak Bluff. The goal of our breeding program is to develop and register new hybrid varieties of B. juncea and B. napus (canola) for the North American market. The North American oilseeds breeding program is based out of Saskatoon, SK, Canada, and this role will be reporting to the InVigor Breeder responsible for yield trialing operations across western Canada and northern US.

Formula for Success: You Will…
• Develops annual field breeding program for designated area as per the overall targets and objectives set by the breeder(s) and executes according to that plan.
• Manage and execute the field trial breeding program operations within designated area which involves contracting, trial and location planning, creating field protocols, field plans, randomization and field books, management and agronomy of in-season seeding to harvesting activities, accurate record keeping and labeling, statistical analysis of agronomic and quality data for trial reports, equipment maintenance and inventory management.
• Accountable to the InVigor Breeder for seed stock logistics in the MB program, ensuring that seed is accurately tracked.
• Investigate and implement improvements to the annual planning process and field program by identifying issues and challenges facing the program and developing solutions to meet these challenges.
• Responsible for data analysis and completion of reports of the trial program requiring work across functions (greenhouse, lab, etc.) within the timelines that are outlined or required.
• Development and administration of the breeding field program resource plans which include human resource plans, main location management, equipment, inventory management.
• Participant in operational and capital budgeting and purchasing. Responsible to help ensure that program operates within budget.
• Provide leadership and management to a team of agronomists in all areas of human resources which includes coaching, employee development, performance management and day to day supervision and administration.
• Manages the quality management system within the breeding field program for their area ensuring that all internal and external quality parameters are met. Ensure all activities are carried out in support of health and safety guidelines, quality management, SOP’s, breeding protocols and other internal and external regulations and practices, as well as participation in the development and improvements of all the above processes as required.
• Maintains technical competency in the area of agronomy and field operations. Act as an industry liaison.
• Will participate in advance breeding and registration trials, nursery and production trials as required. May also be the on-site location manager for B. juncea and other crops and will work with that breeder to carry out and assist in the operational aspects of those breeding plans.

Qualifications

Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You…

• Requires a degree in Agriculture with a minimum 10 years of experience in the canola industry.
• Experience working in a breeding field program is required.
• Experience in plant breeding, genetics, canola agronomy, pollen flow, hybridization systems, genetic purity, conducting research field trials, statistical design and analysis, and have a basic understanding of CSTA requirements.
• Requires excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships within the program and with external parties as well as in the management of a team of agronomists.
• Ability to deliver results in a dynamic environment that requires adjustments to predetermined plans and the ability to execute adjustments in a manner that minimizes impact on desired results.
• A valid class 5 driver’s license required.
