Overview

ECCC is looking to hire motivated students in a broad area of water-related disciplines for the following (2) positions:

Aquatic Science Student Assistant – Water Quality Monitoring
This position will support ECCC’s Hudson Bay – Water Quality Monitoring & Surveillance Division
Duties and Responsibilities:
• The candidate will be engaged in fieldwork, laboratory work, and office work, providing operational support for water quality monitoring and aquatic science studies in the Lake Winnipeg Basin.
• Duties may include, but are not limited to:
o Traveling by truck, boat, or small aircraft to access field sites, including some in remote areas
o Sampling water, plankton, or benthic invertebrates in rivers, lakes and wetlands
o Using and calibrating electronic water quality meters and navigation equipment
o Processing, filtering, and preserving samples in the lab for chemical analysis
o Pre- & post-trip preparation and maintenance of field gear and bottles
o Data management and support
• Required Qualifications: Ability and willingness to work in adverse field conditions and remote locations.
• Asset Qualifications: Outdoor field experience; laboratory skills; and experience with trucks, boats or trailers.

Policy, Planning and Support Student
This position will support ECCC’s Lake Winnipeg Basin Program
Duties and Responsibilities:
• The candidate will provide policy, planning and program administration support for the delivery of the Lake Winnipeg Basin Program as well as related freshwater activities.
• Duties may include, but are not limited to:
o Analyzing, reviewing, summarizing and reporting on regional water issues
o Gathering, analyzing and synthesizing information from multiple sources to inform program implementation
o Supporting engagement with Indigenous partners in the work of the Lake Winnipeg Basin Program
o Creating infographics and/or story maps to showcase program accomplishments

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications and Requirements for All Positions:
The successful candidates will demonstrate aptitude in the following areas:
• Knowledge of the role of Environment and Climate Change Canada related to freshwater water issues.
• Strong technical communication skills, ability to analyze and synthesize data.
• Experience with Microsoft-based programs (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).
• Knowledge of water quality science and environmental issues.
• Communicate effectively (orally and in writing).

Personal Suitability
• Initiative, judgement, reliability and effective interpersonal skills.

Conditions of Employment
• Candidates will be required to pass all relevant security clearances for the position to be staffed.
• Required for fieldwork: Valid driver’s license and pre-employment medical.
