Partnership with Congress of Aboriginal Peoples provides training opportunities at Assiniboine

The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples (CAP) is partnering with Assiniboine Community College to provide a Heavy Equipment Operator program to 10 Indigenous students later this summer.

The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples will provide the tuition for the program for qualified candidates who meet their funding criteria. Interested individuals who are Indigenous persons living off-reserve are encouraged to apply.

The program will be taught at the college’s Victoria Avenue East campus from August 7 through October 12. Qualified students can apply on the college’s website:

“Assiniboine is very pleased to partner with the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples to provide heavy equipment operator training in Brandon. Our graduates remain in demand by local industry, demonstrating the value of programs in which students ‘Learn by doing,’ Assiniboine’s motto,” said Gerald Cathcart, Assiniboine’s Business Development Coordinator, Community Development.

“The Congress of Aboriginal Peoples is pleased to once again provide funding for a project at Assiniboine College, this year, in the Heavy Equipment Operator program. It is projects such as this that provide our constituents with the tools to successfully enter the labour market and engage in meaningful employment. Thank you to Assiniboine Community College for helping us to achieve this goal and we wish our constituents the best of luck in the coming months,” said Sarah Mitchell, National Project Coordinator, Aboriginal Skills and Employment Training Strategy, Congress of Aboriginal Peoples.

In keeping with the college’s Indigenization strategy, cultural content will be infused into the curriculum. Elders and knowledge keepers will visit the program regularly.
