Program Spotlight: Practical Nursing

Nursing is one of the most trusted professions in the world. According to Gallup’s 2022 annual survey, nurses lead in the top spot for honesty and ethics—for the 20th year in a row.

Assiniboine’s Practical Nursing program is a two-year diploma that prepares you to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). Upon graduation, students meet the entry-level competencies (as outlined by the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Manitoba). LPNs continue to develop their nursing competence over the course of their careers through additional education, training and experience.

Nurses are vital to healthcare and are in demand. They are critical members of an interprofessional team. Through the many changes in the Manitoba healthcare system, the important, unique role of a nurse remains constant.

Upon successful completion of the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Exam, Manitoba LPNs are autonomous practitioners, making client care decisions that are within their professional scope of practice and individual competence. They are accountable for the care they provide and the decisions they make.

LPNs promote healthy lifestyles, advocate for clients, provide health education, and directly care for a range of clients. You offer hope, dignity and relief during the best and worst times in someone’s life. You’re there when it counts the most: from welcoming a new life into the world to helping people recover from injury to providing quality, end-of-life care.

Nursing requires strong interpersonal, therapeutic, communication, organization, and critical thinking skills. If you are caring, compassionate and enjoy working with diverse populations, this career choice may be for you.

In the world of nursing, no two days are the same. Each shift, you’ll work with different faces, have a diverse caseload, and practice a variety of competencies. Specialize in a certain sector, become certified in specific types of care, and enjoy varied cases that will have you regularly learning something new.

At Assiniboine, 100% of nursing students get jobs after graduation. Nursing is a long-standing and respected profession. You can take your credentials anywhere and work in a rural or urban setting. There are also a variety of options to work in the type of care environment you’re best suited for—pediatrics, surgery, long-term care, and many other opportunities await.

If you’re looking for personal and professional fulfillment, consider taking Assiniboine’s Practical Nursing program. No matter your background, it’s not too late to become a nurse. Assiniboine Practical Nursing intakes happen regularly in September and January, at locations throughout the province.
